Research tells us that talking with and reading aloud to children are perhaps the most essential and fundamental elements of developing their literacy skills. It also tells us that the more dynamic, engaging and thought-provoking these read-aloud experiences are, the greater the benefits to children.
During this course, you will learn techniques that actively engage children and ensure the most enjoyable and rich read-aloud experiences. You will become a compelling interactive reader who uses children's literature to promote language development, foster curiosity, expand knowledge and create a lasting desire to read. This interactive course allows you to learn at your own pace and offers current research-based models for both preservice and inservice teachers, as well as others involved in the lives of children from birth through middle school.
You will:
- Distinguish and practice age-appropriate book selection and read-aloud techniques
- Engage in dynamic reading that boosts fluency and comprehension
- Initiate wordplay that builds vocabulary, articulation and enjoyment
- Create read-aloud experiences that promote language development, enhance listening skills and increase attention spans
- Generate thinking and discussion around story elements and prediction
You will be guided by the textbook (Read it Aloud! A parent's guide to sharing books with young children by Monty Haas and Laurie Joy Haas), syllabus, expert audio recordings and assignment-specific rubrics. You will also be supported by and have access to an instructor via phone and E-mail and will receive a response to any inquiry within one business day. The course runs on an open enrollment basis. You will have three months to complete your coursework. Just about half of the assignments are recorded on audiocassette with at least one child participant, and half are done in writing. There are no prerequisites for this course.
You have the option of earning one of the following:
- 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU)
- 20 PDPs
- 20 Training Hours (THs)
If you successfully complete all of your coursework focused on one age group (infant/toddler, preschool or school age) that focus can be specified on your certificate.
Read it Aloud! Tips, Tools & Techniques supports national literacy standards of the U.S. Department of Education.
